Hypnosis for weight loss? What you can — and cannot — expect
Let us start with what this page is not: it is not a promise of "losing 10 kilos with hypnosis, effortlessly". Anyone looking for that will find someone to sell it — but not here. Clinical hypnosis can indeed play a useful role in weight management; what matters is understanding which role, for whom, and alongside what.
The problem is rarely information
Most people struggling with weight know perfectly well what they "should" eat. The problem lives in another register: emotional hunger (eating to soothe, to reward, to fill a gap), evening impulses, automatic eating in front of a screen, the restrict-lose control-guilt cycle. It is in that register — of automatisms and emotions — that clinical hypnosis works.
Where hypnosis can help
- Emotional hunger — identifying the states that trigger eating (stress, boredom, sadness) and training alternative responses.
- Impulses and autopilot — strengthening the pause between impulse and action; mentally rehearsing risky situations.
- Your relationship with food — stepping out of the restriction-guilt cycle and building a more neutral, conscious relationship with eating.
- Motivation and identity — consolidating the self-image that goes with the new habits.
What the studies say
Research suggests that, added to behavioural weight management programmes, hypnosis can improve results compared with the same programmes without it — with modest effects that depend on habits being maintained. A realistic expectation: help in changing behaviour sustainably, not a metabolic shortcut.
