Hypnosis for weight loss? What you can — and cannot — expect

None

Let us start with what this page is not: it is not a promise of "losing 10 kilos with hypnosis, effortlessly". Anyone looking for that will find someone to sell it — but not here. Clinical hypnosis can indeed play a useful role in weight management; what matters is understanding which role, for whom, and alongside what.

The problem is rarely information

Most people struggling with weight know perfectly well what they "should" eat. The problem lives in another register: emotional hunger (eating to soothe, to reward, to fill a gap), evening impulses, automatic eating in front of a screen, the restrict-lose control-guilt cycle. It is in that register — of automatisms and emotions — that clinical hypnosis works.

Where hypnosis can help

Hypnosis is a complement — it does not replace medical assessment or nutritional support. And if there are signs of an eating disorder, the right path is specialist mental health assessment, not a weight programme.

What the studies say

Research suggests that, added to behavioural weight management programmes, hypnosis can improve results compared with the same programmes without it — with modest effects that depend on habits being maintained. A realistic expectation: help in changing behaviour sustainably, not a metabolic shortcut.

The HICOA programme

HICOA Clinic's Weight and Eating Habits programme runs to 4 sessions at a fixed fee (confirmed at first contact), led by a psychologist and hypnotherapist, with a mandatory initial assessment. If your case calls for a different approach — psychology, psychiatry or nutrition — that is what we will tell you. Online or in Matosinhos.

Want to try hypnotherapy done properly?

HICOA Clinic runs clinical hypnotherapy programmes with a set number of sessions — stopping smoking, weight and habits, anxiety and sleep — led by a psychologist and hypnotherapist. Online or in Matosinhos.
