Hypnotherapy for anxiety: how it helps — and what to expect
Anxiety lives in the body as much as in the head: the tight chest, the knotted stomach, the locked shoulders, the shallow breath. Many people who have "worked it all out" about their anxiety still feel it exactly the same — because understanding is not enough to switch off an alarm that fires on its own. That is precisely where clinical hypnotherapy can play a part.
What hypnosis does to the alert state
Clinical hypnosis induces a state of deep relaxation with focused attention — physiologically, the opposite of the alarm state. With repetition this state becomes trainable: you learn to bring your own arousal down, faster and more deeply than with a simple "try to relax". On top of that state, the associations feeding the anxiety are worked on — feared situations, catastrophised bodily sensations, anticipations — gradually and safely.
Where it can help
- Generalised anxiety — reducing baseline tension and rumination, complementing the cognitive work of psychotherapy.
- Performance anxiety — exams, presentations, sport: mental rehearsal in a calm state.
- Specific phobias — gradual desensitisation in a controlled setting.
- Physical symptoms of anxiety — when the body fires "for no reason", training the downregulation response.
How it fits together at HICOA
At HICOA Clinic, anxiety is first assessed in a psychology session. From there the plan may include psychotherapy, clinical hypnotherapy sessions, psychiatric assessment, or a combination — according to the case, not according to fashion. Sessions are online or in Matosinhos, and the first conversation carries no obligation.
Want to try hypnotherapy done properly?
HICOA Clinic runs clinical hypnotherapy programmes with a set number of sessions — stopping smoking, weight and habits, anxiety and sleep — led by a psychologist and hypnotherapist. Online or in Matosinhos.
