Allergies, the mind and hypnosis: what the science already shows
Anyone living with eczema, hives, rhinitis or allergic asthma knows something medicine confirms: body and mind are not separate compartments. In bad weeks the skin worsens and the nose flares; in a calm period everything eases. For a long time this was treated as the patient's impression. Today we know it is physiology — and that it can be worked with.
The conversation between the nervous and immune systems
The immune system does not work in isolation: it is in permanent dialogue with the nervous system and with hormones, a field science studies under the name psychoneuroimmunology. That is why mental states have measurable immune effects — and it is that bridge which explains why working with the mind can have a real impact on an allergic response.
What hypnosis research has already demonstrated
Contrary to what people assume, this is neither a new nor a speculative field — studies have been published for decades, some of them remarkable:
- Skin reactivity — in laboratory studies, hypnotic suggestion significantly reduced the skin response to histamine (the flare area in prick tests). In other words, hypnosis modulated an objective allergic reaction measured on the skin — not merely the perception of the symptom.
- Eczema / atopic dermatitis — in a clinical study of 27 patients with atopic dermatitis, after an average of six hypnosis sessions 26 improved or resolved, with a marked drop in severity scores. In another study, adults and children with severe eczema resistant to usual treatments showed statistically significant benefit, maintained up to two years later.
- Allergic asthma — controlled trials showed improvements in bronchial hyper-reactivity and lung function in patients who responded well to hypnosis, with reduced use of bronchodilators.
- Rhinitis — there is data showing symptomatic improvement in allergic rhinitis with relaxation techniques and hypnotic suggestion.
It is not "just stress" — but stress counts too
It would be reductive to say allergies are simply a matter of nerves. An allergy is a concrete immune response to an allergen, and work with the mind acts at several levels: it directly modulates reactivity (as the skin and asthma studies show), it reduces the stress that demonstrably worsens eczema, hives and asthma, and it breaks the cycle in which itching costs sleep, tiredness raises tension, and tension worsens the skin. It is not one single route — it is several, and that is what makes the approach interesting.
How we work at HICOA — and what is non-negotiable
At HICOA Clinic we use clinical hypnosis as an integral part of the therapeutic process in these cases: to modulate the arousal response, work on the emotional component, and improve sleep and quality of life for those living with a chronic condition. We do so with a prior assessment and realistic goals, agreed with you.
There is one line that is not crossed: this work is complementary to medical care — from the immunoallergologist, dermatologist, respiratory consultant or GP — and never replaces it. Nobody should abandon medication, allergen avoidance or, above all, emergency adrenaline in severe allergies. Hypnosis adds to treatment; it does not dispense with it. It is that combination — medical rigour plus work with the mind — that gives the best results.
