The couple after children: when there are no grandparents nearby
Everyone warns you that children change a couple. What nobody explains to couples living abroad is the version without a safety net: having a baby in a country with no grandparents to take a night, no aunts to cover a Friday fever, no childhood friends to say "go and have a coffee, I will watch him".
The impossible arithmetic
At home, a couple with a baby typically has several pairs of hands around them. Abroad there are four hands for everything: work, house, nights, illnesses, paperwork — and somewhere in there you were supposed to find time to be a couple. This is not your failing: it is arithmetic. When the hours do not stretch, the first cut is always the relationship, because it is the only thing that does not cry when it is postponed.
How exhaustion disguises itself as crisis
- Keeping score of sacrifice — "I do more than you" becomes the central theme. Sleep-deprived, everyone loses that calculation.
- Intimacy in the queue — touch, desire, adult conversation: all postponed "until there is time". Time does not turn up on its own.
- Excellent parents, vanished couple — you function beautifully as a logistics team and can no longer remember what you were before you became shift colleagues.
- Comparing with "how it would be back home" — every difficulty reopens the wound of staying or going back.
Oxygen: where to start
Lower the standard for the house and for perfect parenting — done beats flawless; build a local network, even an imperfect one (other parents, neighbours, a babysitter you trust — paying for one evening as a couple is not a luxury, it is maintenance); protect micro-moments (15 minutes of conversation without logistics once the children are asleep is worth more than an idealised monthly dinner); and share out rest as seriously as you share out chores.
When to seek help
If resentment has taken root, if the distance between you persists once sleep returns, or if every conversation about dividing tasks explodes, couples therapy helps you leave survival mode. Online, at a time when the children are already asleep — and it only takes one of you to make the first move.
Your relationship deserves a proper conversation
