Psychologist, psychiatrist or hypnotherapist: which one do I need?
When someone finally decides to seek help for their mental health, they often run into a first practical question: "who do I actually go to?" Psychologist, psychiatrist, hypnotherapist — the names blur, and choosing wrongly can mean time and money lost. Let us clarify, simply.
The psychologist
The psychologist works through conversation and psychological techniques. They do not prescribe medication. They help you understand what you feel, identify patterns of thought and behaviour, and build tools for dealing with anxiety, depression, stress, grief, and difficulties in relationships or adjustment. For most people and most common emotional problems, this is the natural starting point. In Portugal "psychologist" is a title protected by law and regulated by the Portuguese Psychologists Association.
The psychiatrist
The psychiatrist is a doctor specialising in mental health. Being a doctor, they can assess clinically, diagnose, and — what distinguishes them — prescribe medication. You turn to a psychiatrist when symptoms are more intense or persistent and may benefit from pharmacological support: more severe depression, anxiety disorders that do not shift, significant sleep disorders, among others.
The hypnotherapist
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic process that uses hypnosis — a natural state of attention and focus — to support change at a deeper level. It is particularly useful for managing anxiety and stress, habits, fears and phobias, self-confidence and wellbeing. When led by a psychologist and hypnotherapist working within a clinical team that includes psychology and psychiatry, the process runs safely inside a broader therapeutic plan — which is exactly the case at HICOA.
So which should you choose?
- Start with the psychologist if you are looking to understand yourself better, or to deal with difficult emotions, anxiety, stress, grief or life questions. This is the entry point for most people.
- Consider the psychiatrist if symptoms are intense, disabling or persistent, or if you are considering (or already taking) medication and want proper medical supervision.
- Hypnotherapy adds to psychological care when it makes sense for your goals.
The good news: you do not have to decide alone. At first contact we help you work out which approach best suits your situation — and, if needed, how to combine more than one. HICOA brings together psychology, psychiatry and hypnotherapy, all available online, wherever you are.
