Finding an English-speaking therapist in Switzerland

HICOA · Mental Health Clinic — Online sessions in English or Portuguese

In short: Switzerland has no shortage of psychologists, but almost all of them work in German, French or Italian. English-speaking practices exist, mostly in Zurich, Geneva and Lausanne, and waiting lists are common. Online therapy removes both barriers: sessions in English, one hour of time difference, no waiting list.

Why the language of therapy matters more than people expect

Many people hesitate to raise this, worried it sounds like linguistic laziness. It is not. Even those fluent enough to work and live effortlessly in the local language find that, in therapy, something is lost.

The reason is straightforward: your oldest emotions were formed in your first language. Childhood, family, fears, the memories that weigh — all of that was encoded in one language. Reaching that material in a second language means translating while you feel, and translation costs precision. Many people describe themselves as "a reduced version of themselves" when speaking about intimate things in another tongue.

There is also the practical layer. Switzerland is built around four national languages, and English is rarely treated as a core clinical language. That is a structural fact, not a failing of the system — but it means the search takes longer than it should.

What brings people living in Switzerland to therapy

In practice the themes repeat with a consistency that says a great deal about life abroad:

None of these is a sign of weakness or of ingratitude for the life you have built. They are predictable consequences of a demanding experience — and all of them have answers.

How online sessions work

In practice it is simpler than it sounds:

On effectiveness, the research is consistent: online psychotherapy produces outcomes equivalent to in-person therapy for anxiety and depression, with similar adherence rates.

Sessions in English or Portuguese

Both are available, whichever feels more natural to you. Some people prefer English because it is already the language of their daily life; others find there are things they can only say in their mother tongue. Neither choice is more correct — the right one is whichever lets you speak without a filter.

In an emergency in Switzerland

Online therapy is not for crisis situations. If you are at immediate risk, local resources are the right route: 144 (or 112) works nationwide, the helpline Die Dargebotene Hand / La Main Tendue is available 24 hours on 143, and there is dedicated support for young people on 147.

How to start

The first conversation is to understand what brings you, what you would like to be different, and which approach makes sense — psychology, hypnotherapy, or psychiatric support. You do not need to arrive with everything organised, or to be certain it is "serious enough". That doubt is precisely what a first conversation helps resolve.

Would you rather be seen in your own language?

HICOA offers online psychology, psychiatry and hypnotherapy sessions, in English or European Portuguese, for people in Switzerland and anywhere in the world. The first conversation carries no obligation.
